Takenaka Group

Takenaka group is one of the largest construction and engineering conglomerates in Japan. Among its many accolades, we have pioneered quality management activities in the Japanese construction industry, and our passion for quality has received high praise over the years. We have delivered many landmark projects in not only Japan, but throughout Europe and Asia. Apart from our role as a design-build contractor we are also active also act as a developer and have developed and acquired assets in the United States, United Kingdom and Japan.

Our company’s history dates back to our founder, Mr. Tobei-Masataka Takenaka, a construction magistrate in the service of the pre-eminent shogun Nobunaga Oda, who perished in the Honnoji Incident just before completing national unification of feudal Japan. In 1610, after spending years as a wandering samurai and exhausting all hope of restoring his master's household, Mr. Takenaka discarded his sword and set out on the path of a carpenter creating shrines and temples. He became a master builder (toryo) and his ‘toryo’ spirit has been passed down for 17 generations with the family and the organization dedicated themselves to producing the best possible works for their customers.

Across generations, our efforts have transcended the field of architecture and expanded to a variety of activities in the realms of infrastructure, urban creation, and environmental preservation, all under our corporate philosophy of “contributing to society by passing on the best works to future generations”.

We believe that creating the best works will contribute to the formation of social and cultural assets, not only in this era, but also over the next 50 or 100 years and more. In order to stay true to this mindset, we think a long-term perspective is necessary and unlike many publicly traded companies we do not let focus on short term results at the expense of this long term vision. It is for this reason that we have maintained private ownership with unlisted stock shares, which is unique among all major general contractors in Japan.
